Thread Tools Show Printable Version. Hi everyone. I have recently started work as a primary school technology teacher here in Christchurch New Zealand and in our workshop we have an old Dyco bandsaw that needs its wheel tires replaced.Differences Between Rikon 14\
Can anyone tell me the best place to obtain new tires? I see there are either rubber or polyurethane ones. The school holidays have started and today I took the wheels off the machine so I can take them into this firm on Monday.

There are 3 wheels, 2 are 12inch mm in dia and 1 is 10inch mm in dia. Each wheel has raised edges on the rim about 1. What would be the best thing to do, get this local firm to make up some tires or should I buy some ready made ones on line and fit them myself? I would be thankful for any help at all. Google Adsense Advertisement. Join Date Apr Posts Good luck with the Dyco - surely the school can see the way to replacing it as it is over 40 years old. I had read that thread and had tried and failed to locate the Dyco company but after reading your reply I tried again and now think I have succeeded.
They do appear to still exist and are a family owned business located in Auckland called Dyco International Ltd. They started in and look like they are indeed the original manufacturers of our Dyco which is great so I will be calling them tomorrow to see what they recommend. I have been thinking of ordering some polyurethane tires online from overseas as they are reasonably priced even considering the shipping and they look easy to fit.
They are designed to conform to a crowned wheel. Also I have heard some negative things about them. Join Date Jun Location boston Posts You can check on ebay. They have wide selection of band saw tires. I have aftermarket blue urethane tires that I ordered online bandsawparts.Moderators: kiwigeoJeremy D. Calling all Kiwis - What Bandsaws are you using? I have been a bit quiet of late for various reasons, mostly relating to doing a lot more learning to play rather then learning to build, but as things are warming up and the workshop beckons, I am thinking of upgrading my aging but still OK 14" Dyco bandsaw.Syndra tft
It will make more furniture and toys for grandkids than guitars in future but I like the idea of resawing timber so was keen to get something that would maybe do a back set.
In NZ my options seem to be: a The standard Taiwanese machine, badged in various colours from either Carbatec, Machinery House, Amac, Macma, Somac, etc etc - all seem to be pretty much identical, I can get 14 or 17 inch b Scheppach 14 inch c Jet, which now replace the Carbatec models in the NZ store, 14 or 16inch Of course, I did a search of the forum and found all sorts of threads on this topic, but the latest ones end up recommending a brand I cannot get here Laguna It seems to me that the general feeling is that, of the brands available here in NZ, the Jet equipment is generally a bit better, then the Carbatec because they are better spec'd and then the Taiwanese brand.
Does anyone have a contrary view? I wonder what my NZ colleagues are using and what they think of them. Specifically has anyone got a 14 or 16" Jet and what do you think of it. Its a lot more expensive than the others. I also have a sneaky feeling that going to a new 14" might not be an upgrade at all.
I have had the Dyco for 30 years plus and all its needed is a new switch and new rubber tyres. I would welcome any comments Cheers Richard.Sercomm philippines inc
Re: Calling all Kiwis - What Bandsaws are you using? It's a bit better spec'd than most of the other Chinese offerings and a giant leap forward in technology from the old Dycos and Tanners. I can resaw tenor ukulele backs with ease but haven't tried anything wider.
Jacks are a longstanding firm and I found them good to deal with. It's only a 1hp motor and I tried to resaw some tenor uke sized backs and tops and it really didn't have the power to do it well enough. I'm surprised to see the Jet 16 inch only has 1. It struggles to cut through much more than mm of anything. I just take my wood down to the local sawmill and have them re saw it to my specs. Whatever you buy is likely to get a hard time re sawing, so good after market service might be worth considering.
Carbatec were very good to me when my sander packed up. Cheers, Christian. Why does the eye see a thing more clearly in dreams than the imagination when awake? Leonardo da Vinci www. I know it is only a cheapie but I have the 14" 2 speed and after changing over to the 3tpi 25mm blade I have been resawing to my hearts content. I can resaw mm wide boards and that is just wide enough for my dreadnoughts and other shapes. I am successfully resawing down to 4mm with little to no blade swaying and I have put through some fairly hard timbers too.
I have also resawn some Australian Cedar and some King BIlly and they were like cutting through butter well, that might be a bit of an exaggeration but they were smooth!
Changing to the 3tpi blade made all the difference for me. Some have this and some don't JetI wondered about the usefulness I think the motor size is going to be pretty important. I will keep looking and let you know how I get on. Machinery House have a sale on next week.

With an emphasis on resaw ability, I think I'm looking for something with grunt, and heavy cast wheels.
Any of my Kiwi colleagues done their homework on this? I strongly suspect all are the same Asian-made saw with different names. The pics I've seen show spoked, light-looking wheels.

Carbatec has very similar-looking saws, with similar overall weight, but claim that their industrial saws all have solid cast iron wheels. Holytek from Jacks seem to have a 21" HD saw with cast wheels, 3HP, weighing kg -- probably also much more pricey than the above alternatives. Can anyone give some additional insight on what is available in New Zealand and what should be avoided? It will handle anything you can throw at it. Like any bandsaw you need to spend a little time seting up but once it is right it's a dream.
I also have a power feed on mine so I only have to offer up the wood and let it do the rest. I found the same ones you did from lots of different suppliers, and all much of a muchness, all with alloy wheels.
I am not sure what's so bad about alloy, spoked wheels, it seems like they are used on most saws, but hten i dont do much in the way of resawing. My Dyo has allow spoked wheels and I have noticed any problems with them. How to charge pocket wifi
The Carbatec stuff looks a bit beter quality, but they do the same as everyone else, just rebadge chinese made tools. Except that they then add a big chunk onto the price. Generally, I am not convinced the additional quality is worth the additional cost.
If you cannot find the brand you want, then suggest you get something a bit bigger than you need and it will not be working as hard.Ic graphite thermal pad ryzen
However, 21 inches is pretty big. Good luck anyway. I ended up cleaning up my old saw!. Can't offer much guidance as to what else is available in NZ; the only comment I can make is that the Carba-Tec 17, 19 and 21" models are manufactured in Taiwan and do indeed have heavy cast iron wheels, not alloy. I like the sound of that heavier unit though Richard seeaxejust to pick up on a few things you have said.
First, there is nothing 'bad' about alloy spoked wheels. Generally they have been used because they are cheaper to manufacture. But also because they ARE lighter; they were used on smaller model machines that may not cope with the additional weight of cast iron.
Cast iron wheels are a good upgrade on larger machines because the 'fly wheel' inertia does half the cutting for you, reducing the load on your motor. The whole unit needs to be more robust in the first place with respect to these wheels too, which is a good thing.
